In a Whirl

Astrophotography of In a Whirl captured by Tony Brown

This month, I embarked on a thrilling journey into the deeper cosmos with my newfound reflector telescope, equipped with my first off-axis guider. The learning curve was invigorating, especially as I moved from my trusty William Optics Z61 and Samyang 135mm to the awe-inspiring world of 900mm focal lengths. As I pointed my scope toward the zenith, a treasure trove of celestial wonders emerged from the darkness, anchored by the stunning Whirlpool Galaxy (M51), which dances in the night sky just outside my window. Framed against a backdrop of countless otherworldly companions, like NGC 5194 tightly embracing NGC 5195, and the ethereal presence of galaxies like IC 4263 and IC 4278, the scene was breathtaking. Over 3 hours and 45 minutes, my Optolong L-Pro filter revealed a tapestry of cosmic delights, teeming with the intricate spirals and shimmering stars that make astrophotography such a magical pursuit. Though the season of darkness is drawing to a close, these captured moments will remind me all summer of those nights when the universe felt just an eyepiece away.
