The Whole Elephant

Astrophotography of The Whole Elephant captured by Tony Brown

Prepare to be dazzled by this celestial masterpiece captured with the keen eye of an astrophotography enthusiast! At the heart of this image is the enchanting IC 1396, a sprawling emission nebula situated in the constellation Cepheus. This nebula is a vibrant playground where stars are born, surrounded by swirling clouds of gas and dust. Look closely and you'll see the star Erakis, also known as The Garnet Star or μ Cep, casting its reddish hue across the cosmic canvas. Named for its intense color resembling a sparkling gemstone, this supergiant star is one of the brightest in the sky, adding a rich, dramatic touch. The intricate lacework of dark nebulae, like LDN 1080 and its companions, weave through the scene, creating a stunning contrast against the luminescent backdrop. Using a Samyang 135mm lens at f2.8, the photographer has skillfully reduced glare and perfected the composition through 4.5 glorious hours of imaging, offering us a glimpse into the vast wonders of our universe.
